EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE & EDUCATIONAL EFFICACY

On Saturday, the 23 secondary teachers of our school set out for a one-day seminar at The
Retreat House, Bandra, travelling via the scenic coastal road. After a refreshing hot breakfast,
the participants immersed themselves in a thought-provoking workshop conducted by Fr.
George Codeiro SJ, a Jesuit priest deeply engaged in psychology, counselling, psychotherapy,
education, and pastoral management.
The central theme of the seminar was “Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Brain-Based
Pedagogy”—helping teachers harness the power of emotions in the teaching-learning process.
Fr. George explained that emotions are electromagnetic psychophysiological waves, while
intelligence is the ability to grasp, evaluate, and respond to internal or external stimuli. He
reminded us that EI is an inbuilt God-given power, and encouraged everyone to:
● Accept oneself and others
● Open up to growth
● Choose consciously
● Empower ourselves and others
● Move towards productivity
The session was interactive, with teachers sharing personal experiences and insights,
making the learning more meaningful.
Part I – Mind Software
Fr. George described the structure of the mind, which includes:
● Experience
● Thoughts
● Emotions
● Memories/Images
● Beliefs
● Attitudes
● Values (the core of life)
He also highlighted the Five Doors of Experience:
● Visual
● Auditory
● Kinesthetic
● Olfactory
● Gustatory
Part II – The Brain
The brain, often compared to a factory, produces various neurotransmitters that regulate
emotions and behaviour:
● Endorphins – natural painkillers
● Oxytocin – trust, bonding, respect, joy
● Serotonin – warmth, intimacy, shared oneness
● Dopamine – bliss, purpose, success
● GABA – protection, curiosity, learning, reasoning
He explained how the mind’s commands (specific through self-reflection, and generalized
through culture) shape our beliefs, attitudes, and values. Teachers were encouraged to rewrite
negative commands into positive ones for healthier thinking patterns.
An interesting exercise included eye desensitization movement, which helps reverse negative
thought loops.
Reflection & Takeaway
Fr. George concluded with reflective questions for all teachers:
● What have you learned about EI?
● How is it useful in education?
● What personal growth have you gained from these sessions?
The seminar left teachers enriched with practical insights into the interconnectedness of
emotions, intelligence, and education.
