This is the summary of the talk given by Dr Elaine Charles to our Students and Parents on Thursday, 1st July, 2015, in the School Hall.

STUDY SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES

TO HELP YOUR CHILD DO BETTER IN HIS STUDIES

(Dr. Mrs. E. Charles)

WHERE TO STUDY?

Choose a place where there is

    Reasonable quiet

ü  Adequate light

ü  A constant supply of oxygenated air

Increase the oxygen supply to your brain by doing deep-breathing exercises

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO STUDY?

ü  Your books and study material

ü  A table (workspace)

ü  A comfortable chair

Occupy a comfortable posture, but not one that is too comfortable

A lying down position is not conducive to study

WHEN TO STUDY

WHEN NOT TO STUDY

All of us are either

EMS – Early Morning Students  OR

LNS – Late Night Students

ü  Choose your best study time

ü  Avoid staying up very late at night.  If you attend class early the next day – it is likely to affect your performance

ü  If you wake up early, you need to go to bed early and if you keep up late, you need to wake up late

Avoid studying when you are feeling

Sick

Hungry

Uncomfortable

Tired

Upset

Remember, what you take an hour or more to study when you are ill, tired, upset, you will do in half the time when you are well, fresh and at ease

4 FACTORS THAT AFFECT ONE’S STUDYING

   DIET                        DRESS                    SLEEP                    STRESS

DIET

DRESS

ü  Avoid a heavy lunch if you wish to study in the afternoon and a heavy dinner if you wish to study at night

ü  Eat light nutritious foods: soups – sandwiches – salads – fruits – dals – curd – green vegetables – fish

ü  Drink plenty of water while studying

ü  Avoid tight fitting clothes while studying (tight trousers/belts/ties/closed collars)

ü  Instead, use clothes that are:

§  Loose

§  Light

§  Clean

§  Comfortable

SLEEP

STRESS

ü  7 – 8 hours of sleep.  Children who start school very early in the morning could sleep for an hour in the afternoon

ü  Sleep late on holidays

ü  Sleep especially well, before any paper involving reasoning and application of knowledge viz. Maths & Science

ü  Stress is inevitable today

ü  Some stress can serve as positive energy

ü  We must not let stress crush us

ü  Some de-stressors are

·         Prayer / Meditation

·         Yoga / Deep breathing

·         Relaxing and taking a break

5 GOLDEN RULES TO SUCESS

  1. Regular and consistent study.
  2. Content mastery is a must.
  3. Time and Task Management are essential
  4. Solve in writing, previous years Board Papers
  5. Selective study is NOT for those wishing to excel.

BREAKS

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE

ü  Breaks are essential

ü  They must not be too long or too soon

ü  A break of 10 – 15 minutes after 1 hour of study is recommended

ü  Do something you enjoy during these breaks

ü  A break must be long enough to be relaxing and short enough not to destroy the studying mood

ü  The rule is ‘Come back to your books as quickly as possible’

TIRED     SLEEPY

CANNOT CONCENTRATE

ü  Get up, walk up and down and read or study loudly

ü  Change your place of study

ü  Splash cold water on your eyes

ü  Take a quick cold shower and change into fresh clothes

ü  Take a hot beverage

ü  Rest awhile before returning to your studies

TIME AND TASK MANAGEMENT SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL

TIME WASTERS

TIME SAVERS

ü  T.V.

ü  Telephone calls

ü  Talking and wasting time after school and tuition classes

ü  Internet

ü  Social functions viz. parties, weddings, birthdays, picnics

Avoid these just before the exams as they can be distracting and can destroy the studying mood

ü  Make a time table

·         for each day

·         for each holiday

ü  Decide on the time blocks, the subjects you will study, how much you will cover

ü  Take the memory subject when you are fresh and the skill subjects when you are likely to be tired

HOW TO STUDY

LEARNING STYLES

The best method of studying is the SQ3R method

S = Survey

Q = Questions

R = Read & Learn

R = Revise within 2 hours

R = Repeat at increasing intervals

There are 3 main types of learners

  1. AUDITORY LEARNERS who learn by listening and hearing
  2. VISUAL LEARNERS who learn by seeing and observing
  3. KINESTHETIC LEARNERS who learn by doing

HOW TO MEMORISE

PRESENTATION SKILLS

ü  For Visual and Kinesthetic learners writing down answers helps

ü  Study something especially difficult last thing in the night and revise it first thing in the morning

ü  Use code words to remember

e.g. Buddha’s 8 fold path

(MEAT SLAB)

ü  Use sentence framing technique

ü  Make flowcharts for each chapter

Since our exams are written exams, students need to develop presentation skills viz:

·               Neat handwriting

·               Legible handwriting

·               Speed in writing

·               Spelling, grammar & punctuation

·               Write in paragraphs

·               Underline important points

·               Go straight to the answer

·               Be concise and precise
